A fresh chapter is unfolding for the Grand Slam of Curling series as a new organization, The Curling Group, takes over ownership and management following the end of the current 2023-24 season. This transition was officially announced today, alongside Sportsnet, which has been the steward of the series since 2012. Although the operational reins are changing hands, Sportsnet will retain its role as the exclusive Canadian broadcaster for the series.

The Curling Group is an emerging sports business initiative spearheaded by experienced figures from the sports, media, and entertainment sectors. The team includes Nic Sulsky and Mike Cotton, alongside former NFL star Jared Allen and Olympic champion John Morris. Notably, curling legend Jennifer Jones is also lending her expertise as a strategic advisor to the group.

Nic Sulsky, CEO of The Curling Group, expressed enthusiasm about the acquisition, stating, “The Grand Slam of Curling stands as the premier international curling event series, and we are thrilled to build upon its rich legacy. Our goal is to elevate professional curling, providing an enhanced, premium experience that will engage athletes, sponsors, and the sport’s global fanbase more effectively.”

Rob Corte, VP of Production at Sportsnet, shared his excitement about the collaboration, noting, “This partnership will contribute significantly to the sport’s growth while allowing us to focus on delivering exceptional broadcast coverage. The Curling Group’s commitment to advancing the Grand Slam of Curling is something we look forward to, and we’re eager to continue our journey together.”

The Grand Slam of Curling series features top curling teams from around the world and boasts a prize pool of over $2 million each season. Initially owned by Insight Sports under IMG Canada’s license, the series began in 2001 and was initially broadcast by Sportsnet, with Rob Faulds as the lead commentator for 25 years.

John Morris, who retired from high-performance curling after competing in the 2022 Champions Cup, expressed his excitement about the new direction. “The Grand Slams have been vital for us athletes, offering a high-pressure platform to refine our skills,” Morris said. “I’m thrilled to be involved in this new phase, aiming to expand the sport globally and create unforgettable experiences for fans.”

Looking ahead, the 2024-25 Grand Slam of Curling season will include events in Charlottetown, PEI, Nisku, Alta., St. John’s, NL, and Guelph, Ont., with one additional event expected to be announced soon. While The Curling Group will manage the series, Sportsnet will continue to broadcast these tournaments across predicted locations. The current season’s finale, the Princess Auto Players’ Championship, is underway at the Mattamy Athletic Centre in Toronto, featuring a match between Niklas Edin and Brad Gushue. Sportsnet’s exclusive coverage starts on April 11, available on Sportsnet, Sportsnet ONE, and via live stream on Sportsnet+.
